God’s Profound Love Revealed: What the Bible Says About Love
From the opening pages of Genesis to the final words of Revelation, the Bible is an enduring love story. This Holy Book is the remarkable narrative of God’s profound and unwavering love for His people. Scripture is saturated with verses revealing the depths of the Lord’s compassion, affection and sacrificial love for humanity. I always tell people that the main point of the Bible the world is supposed to be filled with love.
Here are some great Bible Verses about love (NIV):
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) This essential verse beautifully displays the greatest possible act of love. God sent Jesus as an atoning sacrifice so that we can have forgiveness and eternal life through faith in Him.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) We were utterly undeserving, but God’s love was so great that He made the way for us to be redeemed while we were still enemies to Him. Christ’s death paid our debt and displayed the incomprehensible largeness of divine love.
“How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.” (Psalm 36:7) God’s love is unfailing, protective, and a source of safety and shelter. No matter what we go through in this life, we can find refuge and security in the embrace of His endless love.
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” (Psalm 136:1) Again and again, the Psalms describe God’s love as eternal, dependable, good, and ever-present. We can’t outrun it or use it up. His affection is everlasting.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud…it is not self-seeking…it keeps no record of wrongs…it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8) This famously beautiful description of agape love is how God loves us. He loves us patiently, kindly, selflessly, trustingly, hopefully, and unfailingly.
“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” (1 John 4:16) Beyond just loving, God’s very essence and nature is love itself. To receive His love and walk in it is to experience intimacy with Him.
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30) Our response to this great love poured out is to reciprocate in total devotion and worship of God with every fiber of our being.
“This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 4:10) Love originated from God’s heart. His immense love for us motivated the indescribable gift of His Son to atone for our brokenness.
“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:7-8) We cannot claim to know God while rejecting love, for God’s very nature is love itself. To experience His love is to be transformed to extend that same selfless affection.
“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.” (Romans 12:9) Authentic love isn’t blind naivety or passive tolerance of wrongdoing. It fights for what is pure and true while firmly rejecting evil.
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” (Ephesians 5:25) Marriage illustrates Christ’s sacrificial, covenant love for His bride, the church. Husbands are to emulate that selfless, serving love toward their wives.
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear…” (1 John 4:18) When God’s perfect, unconditional love saturates our lives, it releases us from fear, anxiety and cowardice. Divine love extinguishes dread.
