The Resurrection of Lazarus: A Profound Miracle of Jesus Christ
One of the most incredible miracles Jesus ever performed was raising His friend Lazarus from the grave after he had been dead for four days already! This amazing story is found in the Gospel of John, chapter 11, and it’s an awesome example of Jesus’ power over death itself.
It all started when the sisters Mary and Martha sent an urgent message to Jesus that their brother Lazarus was deathly sick (John 11:3). But instead of rushing right over, Jesus waited a couple days, knowing He was about to do triumph over death.
When Jesus finally arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had already died and been buried in a tomb. Can you imagine the grief and confusion Martha and Mary must have felt? Martha even said to Jesus, “If you had been here, my brother would not have died” (John 11:21). Despite their sadness, Jesus gave them an amazing promise: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though they die, yet shall they live” (John 11:25).
Then came the breathtaking moment when they rolled away the stone from Lazarus’ tomb. Jesus looked up and prayed to His Father, thanking Him for hearing His prayer. Then, with a loud voice, Jesus called out “Lazarus, come out!” (John 11:43). And amazingly, the man who had been dead for four days came out of the tomb, wrapped in grave clothes!
Can you picture the stunned faces of the crowd that day? Here was undeniable proof that Jesus truly was the Son of God with power over life and death itself. The Bible tells us that because of this miraculous sign, “many of the Jews believed in him” (John 11:45).
For those of us who follow Jesus today, this amazing miracle encourages us to believe in His promises of eternal life. Just as He called Lazarus out of the grave, Jesus has opened the way for us to be resurrected to eternal life through faith in Him. As He said, “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25).
Jesus backed up those words by raising Himself from the dead just days after Lazarus’ resurrection. Because He conquered death once and for all, we can have complete confidence that we too will be raised to eternal life when we put our trust in Him. What a hope-filled promise! Death has been swallowed up in the victory of our risen Savior Jesus Christ.
