Matthew 6:9-13

Mathew 6:9-13
King James Version

After this manner therefore pray ye:

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

King James Version
New International Version

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“ ‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

10 your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us today our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.’

New International Version

Prayer and Praise

The Lord’s Prayer serves as a model and template for how believers should pray. When Jesus’ disciples asked Him how to pray, this is the pattern He gave them. By studying and applying it, believers gain wisdom on how to approach God and what subjects to cover in prayer.

First, it expresses reverence and worship for God as holy and completely “other” than us as “Our Father in heaven.” Beginning with worship focuses the heart rightly on God’s supreme worth.

Second, it aligns our priorities with God’s purposes in petitioning for His kingdom to come and His will to be done on earth. This submission to God’s agenda reminds us He is in control and seeks His interests first.

Third, it asks God to supply our basic daily needs like bread, representing provision and sustenance. Bringing our needs to God expresses dependence on Him.

Fourth, it seeks forgiveness from sin and reconciliation in our relationships. This models humility and readiness to make amends.

Finally, it asks for help resisting temptation and deliverance from the evil one. This request admits our weakness and cries out for God’s protection.

In just a few lines, the Lord’s Prayer encapsulates core aspects of prayer – worship, submission to God’s will, dependence, confession, and spiritual warfare. When believers pray this model prayer from the heart, it transforms how they communicate with God.
