2 Peter 3:13
13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
King James Version
13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
New International Version
End Times
This verse comes in the context of Peter reminding believers of the future restoration that God has promised. He exhorts them to live holy lives in anticipation of this coming hope.
Peter asserts that “in keeping with his promise”, referring to God’s pledge recorded in Scripture, followers of Christ are to look forward to the new heaven and new earth. This speaks of the eternal state where God will completely renew and restore creation.
The present heavens and earth are tainted by the effects of the curse of Genesis 3 and human sin. But God will purify and replace them with a “new heaven and new earth” free from all brokenness and imperfection. This is the glorious future believers are to set their hope upon.
Peter further describes this new creation as a place “where righteousness dwells.” The unrighteousness and injustice that contaminates the present world will have no place in the new creation. Instead, perfect righteousness will characterize God’s new order.
Only what is just and holy will inhabit this completely restored paradise. Sin, corruption, and impurity will be forever eradicated. God’s people will dwell in perfect fellowship with Him.
2 Peter 3:13 offers believers a majestic glimpse of the new creation to come. This hope is to inspire diligent godly living in the present as they eagerly anticipate the day when God will make all things new. The promise of future righteousness should motivate righteous living today.
